posted Feb 12, 2012 2:38 PM by Bret Musser

The Webelo Scouts from Pack 83 participated in a special version of the Klondike Derby, designed for Webelos.  The Scouts were tested on their knowledge of outdoor survival skills, fire building, first aid, and citizenship.  Working together, the Scouts of Pack 83 scored 101 points of a possible 108 points.  Congratulations to the Scouts for working together as a team in this test of their Scouting knowledge!

The Webelos also watched the full Klondike Derby being held for the Boy Scouts.  In this test of team spirit, the Phoenix Patrol of Troop 83 scored only 11 points away from first place, a remarkable achievement for a small patrol.  Congratulations to Troop 83!

The following graph shows how fast each car ran in each of its four heats, sorted by rank.  The fastest cars performed consistently in all four heats.

With the new computerized timing system for the Pinewood Derby, courtesy of Mike Kossor and last year's graduating Webelos Scouts, we can examine how well the track performs.  For example, we have wondered if one lane is faster than any other.  We examined the timed results from this year's race, and found that none of the lanes were significantly faster than any other lane.  The difference in the average time between the fastest and slowest lanes was less than 0.01 seconds, far less than the 0.50 second difference between fastest and slowest cars.
