Beach Jam 2007

We were very fortunate with the weather… gorgeous enough to enjoy almost all weekend and just enough rain to realize how much worse it could have been. Special thanks to Kathie for all the coordination efforts and to “Mr. Bob” for keeping law and smiles on the beach…

Rahway River Cleanup – Update and Thanks

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin at 8:59 am on Wednesday, May 9, 2007

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Earth Day Rahway River Cleanup. I just received and update from the coordinators and wanted to share what we recovered.

As Margaret Mead so eloquently said in relation to Earth Day… “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world.” Well we did make a difference…this was by far our largest cleanup and the most we garbage we have ever removed. On the volume side alone we collected 240 large bags of debris and garbage, and a variety of other different debris and junk. A sampling of what was removed includes:

* 245 Garbage Bags * 45 Truck/Car Tires * 11 Plastic/Metal garbage cans * 9 Plastic/Metal Chairs * 4 Shopping Carts * 4 Milk Cartons * 6 Traffic Cones * 4 Pieces of Pipe * 4 Cinder Blocks * 3 Large Plastic Children’s Toys * 3 Large pieces of vinyl siding * 3 Plastic Buckets * 3 55-Gallon drums (empty) * 3 Hub Caps * 2 Bowling Balls * 2 Wood Palates * 1 Wood/Metal Picnic Table (Whew…what a job!) * 1 leaking 5-gallon can of Thompsen’s Water seal *

We also had some Odd Items that folks identified they found including: Snow Shovel, Red Wagon, Drain pipe, large piece of carpet, Golf Bag, Golf Club, Hockey Helmet, Toy Truck, Gas Can, Watering Can, Toy Parachute, Margarita Glass, Frisbee, Lighter, Plastic Easter Egg, Shoe, Sock, Coconut, Fishing Pole, Glasses Frame, Soccer Ball, Football, Hubcap, Bike Tire, Barney Toothbrush, vacuum cleaner hose, planter, sweater, flip-flop, light bulb, pencil case, inflatable bed, medicine container, cast iron chair, wash basin, bowling ball, sneaker, golf ball, tennis ball, wine glass, hockey puck, car mirror, car headlight, truck reflector, wallet, backpack, small blow-up raft, cell phone, gardening tool, CD, tape, PVC tubing, spray can…we also found a whole lot of credit cards/ID’s that were turned over to the county police.

Thank you again to all who participated…we hope to see you next year!

Joe

Vietnam Moving Wall Memorial visit – May 17th

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin at 2:34 pm on Tuesday, May 8, 2007

In lieu of our regular third Thursday meeting at St. Theresa’s we will be meeting at the Liberty Hall Museum in Union, NJ to visit the Vietnam Moving Wall Memorial. The Moving Wall is a half-scale replica of the actual Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C. We will meet in the museum parking lot at 7pm. Boys are asked to be in full uniform. I would also suggest discussing with them where they are going ahead of time so that they understand that this is a very solemn event and that it deserves every ounce of respect we can give.
